PROTECTING YOUR MOTORCYCLE FROM THEFT
Because motorcycles don’t have the protective metal cage of a car, they’re often easier for thieves to steal. In fact, most thieves choose easy targets that they can successfully take in a matter of seconds or minutes. Fortunately, this knowledge gives you the opportunity to make your bike a tougher target, which helps reduce the risk of theft. Here are a few tips to help you protect your motorcycle.
When walking away from your motorcycle, lock the ignition and remove the key.
Pick a motorcycle cover (if you use one) with a neutral color so you don’t draw attention to your bike.
Install a tracking device on your motorcycle to help with recovery if it’s ever stolen.
The motorcycle’s title, registration and insurance papers should be kept in your wallet, rather than on the bike. This not only verifies ownership, but also makes it difficult for thieves to sell a stolen motorcycle.
Parking at Home
If possible, store your motorcycle in a garage or shed. And if it is in the garage, be sure that your home’s alarm system is wired in there for extra protection.
If your motorcycle is stored in the driveway or another outdoor location, install a motion-sensor light nearby to help deter theft.
Parking Away from Home
When possible, tether your motorcycle to a heavy object like a post. You can even tether multiple bikes together if you’re traveling with a group.
The best place to park is near surveillance cameras or in a relatively open area. Try not to park between tall cars or in an area with poor visibility, which could provide thieves with a place to hide.
Even with all the right protections in place, theft can still occur. A good motorcycle insurance policy can protect your bike and finances if you find yourself in an unfortunate situation.
