YachtIt’s that time of year when the sun is out, the breeze is blowing and the ocean is calling your name. Summer … the perfect time to get the boat and take on the world.

Before you can even think about sailing, your boat must be in tip-top shape. Here are a few things you should do to get ready:

Inspect your boat from top to bottom. This includes the windows, hatches, hull, deck, wiper blades, fittings, and every appliance. Your battery levels, seacocks, electrical systems, hoses, oil and all parts should work. If anything is questionable, now is the time to fix it or replace it.

Making sure your safety equipment is in working order is a high priority. You want to make sure your fire extinguishers, life raft, distress signals, radio, navigation lights, compass, and all other safety measures are operational.

Also check your sails, mast and rigging, as well as your water and pump system.

Clean your boat from the inside out. This helps you see what may need updating or repaired. You may need to paint the hull, or repair a rub rail.

You should also take the time to clean out your drains and scuppers, clean and polish all metal surfaces and oil those surfaces. Also make sure you properly disinfect the boat to clean up any contamination.

Is your registration up to date? You want to make sure your registration is current and onboard before you attempt to take the boat out.

Your boat insurance needs to be in effect before you or any passengers step foot on the boat. Ensuring you are looking out for the safety of everyone, and the safety of your boat is key.

Make sure you don't forget to register and insure your trailer. Check your brakes if you have them. Condition of the tires and the tire pressure, rollers, pads, lights and all electrical connections.

Follow these tips to make sure your boat remains in good shape all year. Having safety protocols in place, and adequate boat insurance will get you ready for the summer season. Have fun!
