Handling boat trailers can be a bit of a tricky task for beginner boaters, but it’s an important skill to familiarize yourself with. Poor handling can result in your boat getting scraped up, or even worse, an accident. Prevent damage to your boat—and the resulting boat insurance claims—by following these tips for safe maneuvering of boat trailers.
First and foremost, practice handling your boat trailer and launching your boat early in the season before the marina gets too crowded.
You will probably have limited visibility while towing a boat, so make use of your mirrors.
When steering the trailer, remember that the bottom of the steering wheel should be pushed in the direction you want the trailer to move. If you goof up, there can only be one other option, so don’t panic.
There will be a bit of lag time before the trailer responds to your steering. Turn gradually and allow a few seconds to see the directional results. Attempting a correction right away can cause over-steering.
Before your reach the boat ramp, install the drain plug and release the securing straps. Raise the lower unit to prevent scraping.
Tie a line to your boat to keep it from drifting after the launch.
With your boat safely in the water, you can enjoy the season’s sunshine with your friends and family. One of the best ways to protect your loved ones and your vessel is with a comprehensive boat insurance policy. Are you covered?
